PIRATE RADIO STATION RAIDED
Ottawa’s pirate radio station, MIX 91.9, operated by 14 year-old Jayaed Saade, has been raided, and its equipment seized by the RCMP.
As reported by The Ottawa Citizen (1) (2), and The Ottawa Sun (1), RCMP officers arrived at the Saadé Inn International in Gloucester on Bank Street (South) Friday, January 15th at 9 a.m. to remove the radio stations broadcasting equipment under a judge-appointed order, and were instructed to remove all of the broadcasting equipment.
Jayhaed refused to reveal the location of the equipment and so when the RCMP couldnt find some of it, they shut off the power to the building and terminated the radio stations signal (insert sympathy here *sarcastic*).
Jayhaed’s father, Georges Saade said that the RCMP told him they would be staying until all of the transmitting equipment was found.
As previously blogged, (1) (2) Jayhaed had been operating this station for sometime, and ignored at least 2 cease and desist orders.
As of 1 p.m. on Friday, January 15th, RCMP had removed the radio antenna but still had not located the transmitter.
And according to The Ottawa Sun, Jayhaed has noted that he WILL be back on the air soon. (Editor’s note: HOW much money does this guy have? And just how stupid is he?)
… I wonder what happens next.

HE’S BAAAAACK!
It look’s like threats of court action, fines, and equipment confiscation will NOT keep this pirate radio operator down! As previously blogged, Jayhaed Saadé, the 14-year-old boy behind 91.9 MIX FM (currently an unlicensed station) is back on the air!
He originally signed off on December 14, 2009, after receiving a second cease-and-desist order from Industry Canada. He even apologized to then in a written statement on his new website www.mixfmottawa.com (his old site was deleted, apparently due to the violation of terms of conditions put in place by the webhost).
As of December 24, 2009, it fired his station back up, and has been broadcasting daily since.
The potential penalties for this type of action include a maximum fine of $5,000, a jail sentence of up to a year, or both. A fine of $250 per offence per day may also be imposed. But this doesn’t seem to deter Jayhaed.
If you like, you COULD support this boy, as he has started an online petition… however, I wouldn’t. It should also be noted, that it’s likely that he has not paid any SOCAN fees, AVLA, and other music type fees… maybe that’s why he has now included a ‘donate’ option on his website via PayPal…

Yep, that’s what I’m TRYING to do… I’m trying to cancel my Sirius Radio subscription.
So here’s my story. I initially activated my Sirius Radio account on October 28, 2008. It was a great deal at the time… 15 months for the price of 12 months! It was great.
Then last week, I receive an e-mail from Sirius Radio stating the following:
—————
Hey Sherwin,
Where has the time gone! Your SIRIUS subscription renews for 1 year on January 28, 2010 so you can continue to enjoy your service with absolutely no interruption! And since your current subscription will be renewing automatically on your current plan, you do nothing unless you’d like to take us up on one of the plans below. Plus, extend your plan any time with no additional charge.
—————
So, being financially conscious, I decide that spending $200+ on a radio subscription this year is probably not in my best interests. So I try to log in and change the preferences on my account to ‘not auto-renew’ —- but of course, that option isn’t there. So what did I do next? I tried to delete my credit card information. But of course, it doesn’t ‘allow’ that. So I have no choice but to call the toll free number specified ** 1-888-539-SIRIUS (7474). **
This is when it gets ‘pissy…’
Call #1: I call the number. After holding for 6 minutes, someone picks up the call (Mary), verifies the information, and she tells me that they will be transferring my call. I then get transferred and put on hold. After 17 minutes I hang up and call again.
Call #2: I call the toll-free number, and after holding for 8 minutes, someone picks up the call (female, can’t remember name), verifies the information, and says “please hold while I verify something on your account.” I then get the ‘thanks for holding’ auto-message (I think I was transferred) and then continue to hold. After 16 minutes I hang up and call again.
Call #3: Third time is a charm… right? I call the toll-free number, and after holding for 7 minutes, someone picks up the call (Ramsey), and verifies the account information. I express my disgust at their customer service. He replies that ‘the department is quite busy during these times,” I reply ‘”then your managers should schedule accordingly.” He apologizes for the wait, and says there is an option “5″ on the phone menu for ‘Customer Relations’ (which I don’t recall). He then says he will transfer me to the Customer Relations department… so here I wait… and wait… oh WTF? The hold music has stopped… oh crap. This can’t be good. It’s been 14 minutes!! Oh wait… a person is on the other line!
It’s CUSTOMER RELATIONS! YAY!
The lady (Tasha) asks me why I want to cancel my account. I reply “you mean BESIDES being on hold 3 times, passed on to… nothing, and being on hold for almost an HOUR in total?” She apologies, and then I add “it’s actually not financially viable at this time.”
She then offers me a full year service for half price. I decline.
But at the end of the call, she then offers me 2 months complimentary service at no charge… well, it was actually to ‘think things over’ on whether or not I REALLY want to cancel my subscription. I accept her peace offering. So YAY for me, another 2 months (until March 28, 2010)! But the downside is that I will have to go through this again in 2 months. Is it worth it?
—
** UPDATE: Tasha (from Sirius) has called me back. She left me a voicemail stating that there was an issue crediting my credit card 2 months for the 2 months free. Unfortunately, I was unable to get to the phone. She did, however, ask me to call her back… or she can try me later on. I think I’ll wait for her to call me back again.
** UPDATE #2: I decided to call the toll-free number again to see if option “5″ is anywhere in the menu (for customer relations). Oh it’s there! I pressed “3″ automatically because I had a question regarding my account. Score 1 for Ramsey!
** UPDATE #3: It’s now January 28, 2010. The f**kers cancelled my Sirius subscription. No 2 free months. No warning. WOW… Sirius has SERIOUS customer service issues.
